Impotence and Erectile Dysfunction–Are They Same?

Impotence and erectile dysfunction are same, this is what we all believe, but the fact is perfectly opposite i.e. Impotence is not erectile dysfunction. Man is said to be impotent when he is not able to multiply his progeny. Impotence is basically caused by four reasons that are erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, less sperm count, and lack of grown sperms. Impotence is thus not erectile dysfunction, whereas it is caused by the erectile dysfunction. Man is called to be impotent when he is sterile. Either you suffer from the erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, less sperm count, or lack of grown sperms you are said to be impotent, and the condition is often termed as impotence. Impotence is the global term used for all these diseases and not only to the erectile dysfunction. But as erectile dysfunction is the most commonly occurring condition from these all conditions, it is termed as impotence.

Erectile dysfunction is the condition in men when they are unable to hold the erection or sustain the erection for the sufficient amount of time during the sexual intercourse. Around 70% of the men worldwide suffer from the erectile dysfunction either temporarily or permanently. The main cause of the erectile dysfunction is found to be lack of blood supply to the penis during the sexual activity. For penis to get erect and remain erect for a considerable time, it requires a persistent supply of blood. If the blood supply is irregular then men are not able to achieve or retain the erection for the adequate duration during the sexual activity.

Physical factors, organic factors, or psychological factors contribute equally and cause impotence in men. In 90% of the men suffering with impotence, physical factors or organic factors are found be the cause. Even the tiredness, anxiety, temporary decrease in libido, and lack of compatibility with the sexual partner can lead to the impotence. Some times even the mental disorders like depression, less self confidence can cause erectile dysfunction. Diabetes, blood pressure, heart disorders, kidney problems, Peyronie’s disease, or liver problems may also cause the impotence in men. Peripheral Vascular Disease is the most common cause of Erectile Dysfunction. In this disease less amount of blood is supplied to the penis, which results in the less rigid erections or the inability to maintain the erection for the sufficient time during the sexual intercourse.

Less sperm count is observed in the men who are basically weak and have suffered with lot of disease in their childhood. Some of the other causes of less sperm count are excessive intake of Alcohol, tobacco, marijuana (cannabis), cocaine, and other recreational drugs. Smoking also contributes considerably for the undeveloped sperms in the man’s semen. Hormonal disorder is one of the reasons of the low sperm count or undeveloped sperms. Aging is one of common hormonal disorder that is caused by the decrease in the level of testosterone, the main sexual hormone in men. Aging is found to be one of the major reasons of the impotence.

Structural damage to the penis is caused by Fibrosis of the penis tissues because of scarring or organic diseases, the painful retraction of the foreskin of the penis or genital herpes, excessive sports, or unfortunate accidents that damages penis. This structural damage may lead to the impotence in the men. But it necessary to be understood by every man, that impotence is basically an inability to produce the offspring. May be person suffering with the erectile dysfunction may have the very good sperm count, but may fail to have a intercourse. Thus he is termed as impotent. Thus, we can conclude from the article that erectile dysfunction is type of the impotence.
